Director, Litigation

Leads complex litigation and pre-litigation disputes for an AI technology company, advising product, engineering, and business teams on legal risk and strategy. Requires a JD, active US state bar membership, and at least 15 years of complex commercial litigation experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage litigation matters and pre-litigation disputes through strategy, pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, hearings, trials, and appeals.
  • Develop case strategies aligned with business objectives across intellectual property, privacy, commercial, and regulatory disputes.
  • Evaluate litigation threats, demands, and disputes across jurisdictions and develop appropriate resolution proposals.
  • Select, onboard, manage, and collaborate with outside counsel; negotiate budgets and fee arrangements, monitor performance, and maintain cost efficiency.
  • Partner with AI, product, and engineering teams to identify litigation risks, support active matters, and translate legal requirements into actionable guidance.
  • Assist with regulatory investigations and inquiries related to products and services.
  • Build scalable litigation processes, policies, legal-hold procedures, discovery workflows, and supporting tools.
  • Monitor developments in AI, copyright, and privacy law and provide executive-ready advice on litigation, emerging risks, and preventive measures.

Requirements

  • JD and active membership in good standing with a US state bar; California bar membership preferred.
  • 15+ years of law firm and/or in-house experience handling complex commercial litigation.
  • Deep knowledge of litigation practice and procedure, with a record of strong outcomes and effective case execution.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, collaboration, communication, business judgment, and risk-assessment skills.
  • Ability to explain unsettled legal doctrine clearly to executives, business leaders, engineers, and other technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with limited guidance and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
  • High integrity, intellectual curiosity, composure under pressure, adaptability, and a hands-on approach.

Nice to Have

  • Experience managing copyright, privacy, and commercial litigation for AI or emerging technology companies.
  • Experience managing regulatory responses or investigations, including first-party and third-party matters.
  • Experience building or scaling a litigation function at a growth-stage company.
  • Experience litigating cases across multiple jurisdictions, including internationally.
  • Interest in developing innovative and trustworthy AI.
