Backend Engineer - Platform - Stacks
Builds and operates backend control-plane systems that create, configure, reconcile, migrate, and manage Grafana Cloud stacks at scale. The role requires Golang experience, distributed-systems knowledge, operational ownership, and comfort leading complex cross-service projects in a remote environment.

Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate reconciliation systems, including the Stack State Service backend, to track desired stack state, detect drift, and repair inconsistencies across stack templates, grafana.com, Hosted Grafana, and customer stack configuration.
- Collaborate across Stack State Service, grafana.com, and deployment configurations to keep stack lifecycle workflows reliable, observable, and resilient.
- Reduce deployment complexity and contribute to stack configuration reconciliation initiatives.
- Manage rollout mechanisms for plugins, dashboards, data sources, Grafana versions, release channels, and stack-level configuration.
- Support new region and cluster rollouts and bring stacks online safely in new Grafana Cloud regions.
- Improve incident response and recovery for stack misalignment, reconciliation failures, plugin rollout issues, and Hosted Grafana integration failures.
- Partner with Product, Hosted Grafana, Infrastructure, Support, and adjacent AppCore squads on customer-impacting stack lifecycle work.
- Contribute to roadmap planning, technical design, on-call improvements, runbooks, dashboards, alerts, rollout controls, and recovery procedures.
- Write efficient, readable, maintainable code and implement new microservices or systems.
- Collaborate with teammates and other departments to reach consensus on solutions.
- Coordinate with product and UX when needed and respond to customer requests and feedback.
- Participate in team decisions, roadmap planning, prioritization, and the follow-the-sun on-call rotation.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of fully remote work experience.
- Experience working on a SaaS platform.
- Familiarity with distributed systems concepts such as scalability, multi-tenancy, and high availability.
- Professional experience with Golang.
- Comfort working remotely and collaborating asynchronously across time zones.
- Ability to lead major projects, coordinate across service boundaries, and help define technical direction.
- Experience with stateful systems, eventual consistency, and reconciliation loops.
- Ability to turn ambiguous lifecycle requirements into explicit, modular solutions.
- Ability to break complex systems work into safe, iterative increments and communicate technical tradeoffs clearly.
- Willingness to use AI-assisted and agentic development practices across design, implementation, testing, documentation, and operations.
