Mechanical Commissioning Technician

Performs hands-on commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and turnover of mechanical cooling and support systems for high-performance data centers. Requires at least three years of mechanical, HVAC, pipefitting, or commissioning experience and extensive travel to onsite project locations.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Execute mechanical commissioning activities for chilled-water and condenser-water systems, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, air handlers, computer-room cooling, liquid-cooling equipment, and associated controls in data center environments.
  • Perform flush, fill, leak, and pressure tests; verify valve lineups, flow, temperature, and pressure against designs and sequences of operation.
  • Complete point-to-point checks with controls technicians and confirm sensors, actuators, interlocks, and alarms respond correctly.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues during pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup.
  • Develop and execute commissioning test procedures, scripts, and documentation.
  • Coordinate startup sequences and integrated system testing with EPC contractors, OEM vendors, and engineers.
  • Walk systems against drawings, mark redlines, document punch-list items, and drive deficiency closeout.
  • Follow safety protocols, LOTO procedures, and quality standards.
  • Maintain as-built documentation, test records, and commissioning reports.
  • Support operations and maintenance team training.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and provide field feedback.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on mechanical, HVAC, pipefitting, or commissioning experience in data centers, power plants, or large industrial facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of chilled-water plants, pumping systems, heat-transfer equipment, and mechanical distribution.
  • Experience with commissioning and field test equipment, including pressure gauges, flow meters, temperature instruments, and leak-detection tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and equipment submittals.
  • OSHA 10/30 or equivalent safety training.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, nights, and weekends during critical commissioning windows.
  • Ability to travel extensively, remain onsite during peak commissioning phases, work in industrial environments, climb ladders, lift moderate loads, and wear PPE for extended periods.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Commissioning experience on hyperscale data center or mission-critical facility projects.
  • Experience with liquid-cooling distribution, cooling towers, and primary/secondary pumping.
  • Familiarity with building-management or industrial-control sequences.
  • EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification.
  • Technical degree or trade-school certification in Mechanical Engineering Technology, HVAC, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with commissioning management software such as CxPro or Procore.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Full-time, onsite role with significant travel to data center sites.
