Responsibilities
- Own outcomes from ingestion through payment: define "correct" for adjudication and money movement; accountable for adjudication accuracy, payment timeliness, ledger reconciliation, ingestion SLAs, and the multi-year roadmap.
- Set the bar and pace: establish validation standards and definition of "done"; run a performance culture focused on highest-value work first, automating toil, and holding engineers accountable for outcomes.
- Stay close to the work: participate in hard design reviews, read code, investigate incidents, and hold defensible technical positions on adjudication logic, event contracts, data modeling, and money movement.
- Make agent-first the default: integrate AI-native engineering into FIN operations; build harnesses, validation frameworks, and Claude Skills to enable faster, safer shipping and mature the organization toward autonomous AI with guardrails.
- Own technical direction: guide backend toward event-contract boundaries for independent team shipping and scaling to tens of millions of claims; ensure fault tolerance to prevent dropped or double-paid claims; own security and data-integrity posture for partner data and funds.
- Build and grow the team: hire, level, and develop Engineering Managers and senior ICs; own interviewer calibration; design org structure and decision rights for clear ownership.
- Translate across the business: partner with CTO, Product, Finance, Operations, and payment partners to convert business needs into technical plans; communicate risks and tradeoffs effectively.
Requirements
- 10+ years building and operating high-scale, high-reliability backend systems, ideally processing large data volumes and/or moving money.
- 5+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers, in a high-accountability, high-urgency environment.
- Technical credibility at scale: ability to reason through design docs, schemas, or incident timelines and define validation criteria.
- Opinionated view on agent-first / AI-native engineering: how to make it the default operating model and mature it safely from assisted to autonomous.
- Experience with sensitive data (regulated PHI/PII/financial data, unvalidated third-party inputs, encryption, access, audit) and instinct for reconciliation-first design.
- Fluency in distributed systems and modern cloud: event-driven architecture, idempotency, fault tolerance, backpressure, data consistency under load, AWS, and API design.
- Ownership mindset: proactively move problems to resolution and optimize for member and business impact.
- Desire to join a high-performing, mission-driven team with intense urgency, individual accountability, and commitment to authentic feedback.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience in healthcare or financial systems handling PHI, PII, or regulated financial data.
