Staff Product Designer
Staff Product Designer owning complex multi-service observability, deployments, and failure states for Render's developer cloud platform. Requires 7+ years experience, exceptional craft, information architecture skills, and fluency in developer workflows to create cohesive, high-stakes interfaces.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Make a multi-service system legible at a glance by designing views that show how services connect and depend on each other.
- Design system-level observability with aggregated logs, metrics, deploys, and events across a project, focusing on hierarchy, scanning speed, and progressive disclosure.
- Design coordinated cross-service deployment, rollback, and preview models for safe shipping at scale.
- Own all product states including build errors, failed deploys, empty states, and turn them into helpful experiences.
- Design the first-run experience from signup to first successful deploy to build initial trust.
- Contribute concept explorations and a strong point of view to a design-led discovery track shaping the platform's future.
- As a Staff IC, raise the bar across the organization through mentorship, design leadership, and cross-functional influence.
Requirements
- 7+ years of relevant experience in developer tools, cloud infrastructure, or complex high-stakes products.
- Exceptional taste and craft with obsessive attention to typography, spacing, motion, density, and interaction feedback.
- Strong information architecture skills to turn tangled objects and relationships into one obvious system.
- Ability to design the whole user journey coherently across every surface from entry to failure to recovery.
- Fluency in developer language around services, CI/CD, and deployments with curiosity to dive deep.
- Respect for failure states, treating error messages as interfaces and designing for users having a bad day.
- Systems fluency and comfort contributing to a design system.
- Strong product judgment, ruthless prioritization, and clear direct communication.
- Collaborative working style with product and engineering partners.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience designing complex dashboards, monitoring tools, or console interfaces.
- Hands-on experience being on-call, running side projects, or debugging production systems.
- Excitement to design CLI tools, shape SDKs, explore agentic workflows, or AI-assisted design.
- Design-engineering literacy with comfort near code, motion, or prototyping.
- Writing, talks, or side projects demonstrating craft and point of view.
