Manager, Developer Relations - Open Source

Responsibilities

• Own developer relations for Databricks’ open source portfolio end-to-end, including strategy, success criteria, and outcomes.
• Hire, level, and grow a team of Developer Advocates, taking ownership of their careers through clear expectations, feedback, and progression.
• Strengthen Databricks’ standing as a trusted, vendor-neutral participant in the Apache Software Foundation and Linux Foundation ecosystems.
• Establish repeatable advocacy approaches, including content flywheels, contribution guides, and event playbooks.
• Grow external adoption and contribution across open source projects and help develop future maintainers.
• Drive awareness and adoption of the Open Lakehouse and Omnigent through industry talks, conferences, and team appearances.
• Guide the creation of educational content, including videos, sample notebooks, datasets, tutorials, courseware, and blog posts.
• Expand and nurture communities through meetups, user groups, online communities, mailing lists, and issue trackers.
• Represent community needs within R&D and turn contributor friction into prioritized roadmap changes.
• Apply AI-assisted workflows to increase team leverage while maintaining technical depth and originality.
• Define and defend meaningful success metrics for an open source Developer Relations team.
• Deliver talks, host panels and meetups, create blogs and video content, develop courseware, answer community questions, and meet with contributors and maintainers.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams and fellow Developer Relations managers on open source strategy.

Requirements

• 8+ years of combined experience in developer relations or developer advocacy and a hands-on technical role such as software engineering, data engineering, or solutions architecture.
• 2+ years managing and growing a Developer Relations team, including hiring, leveling, and promotions.
• Hands-on experience writing posts, building demos, giving talks, filing issues, and participating in forums.
• A substantial, verifiable open source track record, including sustained contribution and experience with project governance, release processes, and community norms.
• Established relationships within the Apache Software Foundation and Linux Foundation ecosystems.
• Deep knowledge of Apache Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Apache Iceberg, and MLflow.
• Working understanding of the open source agentic landscape, including Omnigent.
• Subject matter expertise in solving data engineering, data science, or data analytics problems at scale.
• Passion for growing people and building strong teams.
• Active participation and recognized leadership in open source forums, chats, and meetups.
• Experience nurturing developer communities, organizing user groups, and facilitating global meetups.
• Exceptional communication skills across writing, teaching, video, and public speaking.
• Experience using AI to scale team output without lowering the technical bar.
• Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and align community initiatives with product objectives.

Compensation

• Salary range: $172,300–$236,950.
• Actual compensation is based on job-related skills, experience, certifications, training, and specific work location.
• The total compensation package may also include eligibility for annual performance compensation and benefits.
