Operations Specialist, Payroll Reconciliation

Own payroll deduction reconciliation, investigate financial discrepancies, and improve controls and automation in partnership with Operations, Finance, and Engineering. The role requires 4–7 years of relevant experience, strong analytical judgment, and a bachelor’s degree.

Responsibilities

  • Own the payroll deduction reconciliation queue, reviewing new and updated deductions before each payroll run and approving or escalating flagged discrepancies.
  • Trace reconciliation errors to root causes across enrollment, premium, and payroll connection data, and drive upstream fixes.
  • Partner with Engineering to scope and prioritize automation opportunities, including auto-approval rules, tooling, and monitoring.
  • Manage escalations from payroll connection failures and invoice review queues.
  • Build and maintain SOPs and audit trails for transparent, repeatable reconciliation decisions.
  • Report on reconciliation accuracy and queue health, surfacing trends and risks to Operations and Finance leadership.

Requirements

  • 4–7 years of experience in operations, financial or payroll reconciliation, or management consulting.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with financial and payroll data to identify discrepancies and root causes.
  • Experience designing or improving reconciliation, audit, or financial control processes.
  • Strong independent judgment in ambiguous or high-stakes situations.
  • Experience partnering with Engineering to translate operational needs into tooling or automation requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite in Austin, TX.

Nice-to-haves

  • MBA or other advanced degree.
  • Management consulting experience, particularly strategy or operations consulting.
  • Experience with payroll, benefits, or fintech reconciliation systems.
  • SQL querying experience or comfort scoping automation requirements with engineers.
  • Experience in a high-growth startup environment.

Compensation

  • Estimated compensation range: $91,000–$120,000 USD annually.
