Responsibilities
Indirect Tax Compliance and Reporting
- Lead sales and use tax, VAT/GST, excise tax, and other transaction-based tax compliance.
- Oversee preparation, review, and filing of indirect tax returns and payments.
- Maintain controls, documentation, reconciliations, and supporting workpapers.
- Monitor filing obligations, registrations, nexus requirements, and changes in the tax footprint.
- Manage third-party compliance and reporting providers.
Tax Advisory, Planning, Audits, and Risk Management
- Advise stakeholders on indirect tax implications of products, services, customer arrangements, geographic expansion, supply-chain changes, contracts, and commercial initiatives.
- Research and interpret indirect tax legislation, regulations, and administrative guidance.
- Identify tax-efficiency opportunities, overpayment recovery opportunities, and areas of exposure.
- Lead tax audits, examinations, inquiries, authority correspondence, negotiations, and remediation plans.
- Maintain and enhance the indirect tax control framework and governance processes.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess business impact.
Systems and Process Improvement
- Partner with Finance, Accounting, IT, and Operations on indirect tax configuration in ERP, billing, procurement, and tax determination systems.
- Drive automation and process improvements for accuracy, scalability, and efficiency.
- Support system implementations, upgrades, integrations, and business transformation initiatives.
- Improve data and analytics for compliance, reconciliations, audit defense, and risk management.
Leadership and Stakeholder Management
- Manage, coach, and develop indirect tax team members as applicable.
- Set priorities across compliance, advisory, audit, and project work.
- Collaborate with Accounting, FP&A, Treasury, Legal, Procurement, Sales, Operations, IT, and other business teams.
- Communicate complex tax matters clearly to tax and non-tax stakeholders, including senior leadership.
- Manage external tax advisors, consultants, and service providers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field.
- 8+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant indirect tax experience.
- Strong technical knowledge of sales and use tax and/or VAT/GST.
- Experience managing indirect tax compliance, audits, research, and advisory matters.
- Strong understanding of accounting processes, financial systems, and internal controls.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, project-management, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and influence stakeholders at multiple organizational levels.
Nice-to-Haves
- CPA, CA, JD, LLM, or another relevant professional qualification.
- Experience with additional indirect taxes.
- Experience in Big Four/public accounting, a multinational organization, or a complex corporate tax environment.
- Experience with ERP and indirect tax platforms such as NetSuite, Anrok, or Vertex.
- Strategic, commercially minded approach to tax planning and risk management.
- Experience building scalable processes, improving controls, and developing people.
