Machine Learning Engineer II, Responsible AI

Develop and deploy responsible AI and machine learning fairness solutions across Pinterest’s large-scale, user-facing products, including generative AI, search, and recommendations. Responsibilities

  • Execute responsible AI projects to identify, avoid, and mitigate bias across machine learning applications, including generative AI.
  • Collaborate with trust and safety, user modeling, and content understanding engineering teams to leverage platforms and signals.
  • Drive adoption and evaluation of responsible AI practices and machine learning fairness tooling across Pinterest.
  • Mentor junior engineers on responsible AI.
  • Define and drive technical strategy with the team and senior company leaders.

Requirements

  • Extensive real-world experience applying advanced machine learning methods to production systems, with experience spanning fairness, ethics, and broader societal considerations.
  • Deep familiarity with transformer-based models, two-tower architectures, large language models, and large-scale search and recommender systems.
  • Experience measuring, deploying, and refining fairness interventions and responsible AI solutions at scale.
  • Experience bridging machine learning research with tangible product impact.
  • 2+ years of experience working on engineering teams building large-scale, ML-driven user-facing products.
  • Master’s or PhD in computer science or a related field.

Nice to Have

  • Publications at top machine learning conferences.
  • Experience using Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Codex, or similar AI coding assistants for development, debugging, testing, and refactoring.
  • Familiarity with LLM-powered tools for documentation search, experiment analysis, SQL/data exploration, and engineering workflow acceleration.
  • Expertise in scalable real-time systems processing stream data.
  • Passion for applied research and Pinterest’s product.

Compensation

  • Base salary: $138,905–$285,982 USD.
  • Equity eligibility.
