Forward Deployed Engineer

Build partner integrations, verification APIs, MCP experiences, demos, and reference implementations for Baselayer’s agentic commerce products. The role requires 5+ years of production software experience, strong TypeScript or Python skills, deep API integration expertise, and direct customer or partner engagement.

About the role

Responsibilities

  • Ship partner integrations of agentic economy products from the first technical call through production.
  • Build prototypes, demos, and reference implementations for partner meetings, communities, and conferences, often on short notice.
  • Own developer- and agent-facing quality, including API ergonomics, documentation, sample repositories, sandbox environments, integration guides, and technical posts.
  • Get the MCP server listed, featured, and performing in connection hubs, directories, and marketplaces for agent builders.
  • Optimize the agent-facing experience, including tool descriptions, response design, and error handling.
  • Participate in agent-builder communities, hackathons, working groups, and open-source repositories as a builder.
  • Serve as the engineering voice in partner calls and translate partner constraints into clear specifications for the core platform team.
  • Feed field learnings back into the product roadmap alongside product and general management leadership.

Requirements

  • 5+ years shipping production software.
  • Strong TypeScript and/or Python skills.
  • Deep API design and integration experience, including REST, webhooks, and OAuth/JWT authentication flows.
  • Direct experience working with customers or partners.
  • Hands-on experience with the modern agent stack, including MCP, LLM tool-calling, and agent frameworks.
  • Ability to take a demo from idea to working implementation in days and an integration to production in weeks.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity, with startup pace and end-to-end ownership.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience building with MCP, LLM tool-calling, or agent frameworks.
  • Familiarity with verifiable credential standards such as SD-JWT-VC, DIDs, and HTTP message signatures, and/or identity infrastructure.
  • Payments or fintech background.
  • Prior forward-deployed, solutions engineering, or founding engineer experience.
  • An existing presence in AI and agent-builder communities.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range: $145,000–$220,000 plus equity.
