Senior / Staff Backend Engineer, Maps
Build and own the geospatial data foundation behind Radar’s high-throughput geocoding platform, spanning ingestion, enrichment, indexing, and serving. The role requires a generalist engineer comfortable across Scala, Python, and Rust, with experience in large-scale data systems and customer collaboration valued.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Own the data foundation under the geocoder, including how location data is modeled, kept consistent, and served reliably across Scala, Python, and Rust.
- Build pipelines that combine commercial and open data sources, expanding coverage and quality across US and international data.
- Bring LLMs and agents into the data layer for enrichment, labeling, and quality, with guardrails to keep them trustworthy.
- Work across the geocoding stack as needed, from the HorizonDB serving path to the Node.js/TypeScript API.
- Power more than 1 billion API calls per day.
- Talk to customers and prospects, incorporate feedback, and help make them successful.
Requirements
- Generalist engineering mindset rather than being tied to a particular stack.
- Interest in talking to customers or prospects and helping them succeed.
- Deep curiosity about how systems work and tenacity with difficult problems.
- Most engineers participate in the on-call rotation.
Nice-to-haves
- Former technical co-founder.
- Experience with high-throughput, high-growth SaaS applications.
- Geospatial infrastructure experience.
- Large-scale data pipelines or data-integration systems.
- LLMs in data or ML pipelines for enrichment, labeling, or evaluation.
Technical Environment
- HorizonDB, a geospatial database written in Rust.
- Tantivy, RocksDB, and FSTs for indexing.
- ML models for query understanding and ranking.
- Scala and Python data pipelines on Airflow.
- Node.js and TypeScript API layer.
- MongoDB, S3/Athena, and Redis.
