Senior Mechanical and Industrial Design Engineer
Leads industrial and mechanical design for Stripe Terminal payment hardware from concept through mass production, covering enclosure design, CMF, manufacturability, validation, and supplier qualification. Requires 8+ years of consumer or commercial hardware experience, Creo proficiency, and English and Mandarin communication skills.
About the job
Responsibilities
Industrial design
- Lead ideation and concept development through hand sketching, digital sketching, and physical foam or 3D-printed models.
- Define the visual and tactile design language for Terminal hardware, including proportion, form, surface transitions, button feel, and product character.
- Produce photorealistic product renders using KeyShot or similar tools.
- Define and manage color, material, and finish (CMF) specifications with suppliers.
- Manage packaging design and qualify final deliverables and the unboxing experience.
- Apply ergonomics and human factors principles to create intuitive, comfortable products.
- Maintain visual consistency and brand coherence across the Terminal hardware family.
Mechanical engineering
- Design mechanical components and assemblies using Creo or SolidWorks.
- Create mechanical designs and drawings, assess manufacturability, and resolve technical problems.
- Lead tolerance analysis, computer-aided engineering (CAE), finite element method (FEM) simulations, design of experiments (DOE), and physical prototyping.
- Analyze and verify mechanical designs, identify risks, and propose mitigations.
- Manage bill of materials (BOM) cost and mechanical design schedules.
- Prepare BOMs, component specifications, and support failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) activities.
- Review design fixtures and calibration processes for high-precision mechanical assemblies.
- Verify and qualify components during first-article builds and participate in pilot production.
- Produce engineering specifications, design-for-excellence (DFx) guidelines, technical reports, and gate-review packages.
- Partner with Quality and Reliability teams on validation and hardware durability.
- Support PCI and regulatory compliance and certification activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related field.
- 8+ years of hands-on product design experience spanning mechanical engineering and industrial design.
- Portfolio of consumer or commercial hardware products, including consumer-grade plastic enclosures for handheld products from concept through mass production.
- Ability to communicate design concepts through hand or digital sketching and define CMF specifications with suppliers.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and mechanical production processes, including DFM, tooling, and production.
- Proficiency with mechanical CAD software; Creo is required and SolidWorks is a plus.
- Expertise in detailed 2D drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and tolerance analysis.
- Familiarity with mold design, first-article inspection (FAI), process capability (Cpk) analysis, and supplier and factory relationships.
- Strong written and spoken English and Mandarin communication skills.
- Willingness to travel internationally, including to Hong Kong and mainland China.
Nice-to-haves
- KeyShot, VRED, or Blender.
- Experience maintaining design language across a multi-SKU hardware family or accessory ecosystem.
- Ergonomics methodologies, grip studies, anthropometric data, and usability evaluations for handheld devices.
- Point-of-sale hardware, payment terminals, or consumer electronics peripherals.
- PCI hardware requirements, material properties, and associated manufacturing processes.
- Thermal calculations and plastic material properties.
- Mechanical simulation tools and metal-part design.
- Presenting design rationales to cross-functional and executive audiences.
