About the role

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Portfolio Management & Strategic Advice

  • Oversee lifecycle of Okta’s IP assets, aligning with business goals.
  • Execute offensive and defensive IP strategies.
  • Advise on IP risks and trends; translate concepts for stakeholders.
  • Refine IP policies including invention disclosure and patent incentives.

Patents

  • Partner with engineering/product teams to identify inventions.
  • Collaborate with counsel on drafting and prosecution.
  • Analyze patent landscape to guide strategy.
  • Protect core and next-generation technologies.

Other IP Issues

  • Advise on trade secrets, copyrights, OSS, trademarks.
  • Draft/review IP provisions in contracts and licensing.
  • Conduct IP due diligence for acquisitions.

Compliance and Policy

  • Handle IP compliance and standards.
  • Deliver IP training to employees.

Litigation

  • Support all phases of IP litigation.

Qualifications

  • Education & Credentials: J.D. from accredited law school, active Bar membership, USPTO Registered Patent Attorney, undergraduate/graduate degree in CS, EE, computer engineering or similar.
  • Experience: 5+ years IP experience including software patent prosecution.
  • Technical Savvy: Experience with SaaS/cloud software.
  • Mindset: Builder mindset, flexible, team-oriented, independent.

Compensation

Annual base salary range: $180,000 - $248,000 USD (CA excl. SF Bay Area, CO, IL, NY, WA), plus equity, bonus, benefits.
