Embedded Systems Engineer

Design FPGA-centric medical-device electronics spanning board schematics, Xilinx logic, embedded Linux drivers, and application interfaces. The role requires 4+ years of embedded experience, strong hardware/software integration skills, and familiarity with regulated development processes.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Design and own detailed electrical schematics for complex, FPGA-centric medical devices, including component selection, power architecture, clock distribution, DDR interfaces, and analog signal conditioning.
  • Architect, implement, and verify Xilinx FPGA designs using Vivado and Vitis, including custom IP blocks communicating with Linux applications through AXI4 Lite, Stream, and Memory-Mapped interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain Linux kernel drivers and user-space libraries connecting FPGA logic with C++, Rust, and Python applications.
  • Participate in the full medical-device product lifecycle within IEC 62304 and ISO 13485 frameworks, including requirements definition, architecture, FMEA, and verification testing.
  • Guide PCB stack-up and high-speed routing, perform board bring-up and bench testing, and debug schematics using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Solve cross-domain embedded problems, including signal-integrity debugging and Python-based hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Optimize embedded systems for low latency, high throughput, SWAP-C constraints, and patient safety.

Requirements

  • 4–7+ years of hands-on embedded systems development experience.
  • Experience creating complex FPGA-based board schematics with tools such as Altium Designer or KiCad.
  • Knowledge of power sequencing, high-speed routing constraints, and mixed-signal layout.
  • Proficiency with Xilinx Vivado, Vitis, and AXI interconnects.
  • Proficiency in VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog for synthesis, simulation, and timing closure.
  • Strong embedded Linux experience with Yocto, PetaLinux, or Buildroot, including kernel configuration and cross-compilation.
  • Fluency in C/C++ or Rust for low-level firmware and driver development, plus Python proficiency for scripting and data analysis.
  • Understanding of SPI, I2C, UART, and high-speed serial links.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience in regulated medical-device environments, including FDA or MDR requirements and IEC 62304.
  • Experience with precision analog front ends, ADCs, DACs, and PMICs.
  • Experience with DSP, Zynq, MPSoC, RFSoC, or high-speed transceivers.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and location.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with employer contribution.
  • Paid holidays and vacation.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
