Technical Escalations Engineer 2

Handles complex customer escalations involving usage metering, billing anomalies, revenue-impacting behavior, and cloud cost management. The role partners with Product, Engineering, Finance, and Solutions teams to investigate root causes, build diagnostic resources, and improve billing transparency.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Become the technical expert on usage metering, revenue-impacting behavior, and cloud cost management across Datadog products.
  • Lead escalations involving unexpected usage, missing metering data, usage spikes, billing anomalies, unclear attribution, and limits enforcement, including quotas, plans, exclusions, and overages.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and Finance to escalate bugs, align on expected behavior, improve usage visibility, and promote billing and usage transparency.
  • Build internal guides, tooling, diagnostics, playbooks, and customer-facing content for billing, revenue, usage, and cost-management questions.
  • Train and enable the global Solutions team with scalable resources for usage, billing, and cost-related conversations.
  • Surface customer feedback and recurring patterns to influence the roadmap for usage visibility, billing transparency, and cost management.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of cloud cost drivers, usage attribution, and spend analysis.
  • Familiarity with AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud billing models, including usage types, tags, accounts, projects, APIs, and billing exports.
  • Ability to investigate data retention, high-cardinality signals, metric volume, log ingestion, and overage prevention, and translate telemetry volume into cost impact.
  • Familiarity with APIs, product usage metrics, tagging strategies, account-level configurations, and multi-organization setups.
  • Ability to work across technical and business boundaries, including backend telemetry pipelines and customer-facing issues.
  • Analytical, precise, and able to communicate usage and cost impact to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable investigating ambiguity, data anomalies, and edge cases and identifying root causes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Computer Science or Engineering background.
  • Experience with Zendesk, Jira, Confluence, or similar software.
  • Familiarity with Datadog, its integrations ecosystem, or comparable observability platforms.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual salary: $85,000–$113,000 USD.
  • New hire stock equity (RSUs) and employee stock purchase plan (ESPP).
  • Global mental health benefit through Spring Health.
  • Healthcare, dental, parental planning, mental health benefits, 401(k) plan and match, paid time off, fitness reimbursements, and discounted employee stock purchase plan.
  • Product training, career development and internal mobility opportunities, mentoring, and buddy programs.
