Designs, builds, and optimizes large-scale distributed database systems, pipelines, and performance tooling. Responsibilities
- Design, build, and support large-scale, distributed data systems and pipelines.
- Manage RDS databases and develop data pipelines.
- Optimize data storage, retrieval processes, queries, schemas, and workloads.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve complex performance and scalability issues.
- Analyze execution plans, indexing strategies, concurrency, locking, statistics, transaction isolation, and resource utilization.
- Build automation and tooling to detect, diagnose, and remediate database performance and reliability issues.
- Partner with application and platform teams to improve database access patterns and system design.
- Design and support database-backed APIs.
- Establish, document, and enforce database performance best practices and enterprise standards.
- Lead the design and implementation of data storage and streaming solutions, data architecture, analytics frameworks, governance protocols, and data quality standards.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in database performance, CDC, ETL, scalability, and security.
- Partner with senior leadership to align data architecture with business strategy.
- Lead modernization, migration, and transformation projects.
- Mentor engineers and technical staff, lead knowledge-sharing efforts, and influence architecture and design decisions.
- Evaluate technology trends and make strategic recommendations.
- Explain complex technical concepts and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements
- Expert-level knowledge of performance tuning and optimization.
- Expert-level knowledge of transactional databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Aurora.
- Expert-level knowledge of analytical technologies such as Amazon Redshift and Apache Iceberg.
- Expertise in query optimizers, execution plans, indexing, statistics, and transaction isolation.
- Experience building automation and tooling for database performance and reliability.
- Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform.
- Experience leveraging AI to identify bottlenecks automatically.
- Experience with AWS and managed database services.
- Experience monitoring, troubleshooting, and tuning performance in distributed systems.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
- Experience with capacity planning, workload modeling, and cost optimization.
- Proven track record of improving database performance at scale.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field and at least 14 years of related experience; alternatively, an advanced degree with 8+ years of experience or equivalent related experience.
- Recognized expertise in database design, architecture, and optimization.
- Demonstrated leadership in enterprise database strategy and execution.
- Experience with cloud-native and distributed database solutions.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills.
