Senior Software Engineer - Observe by Snowflake, Metrics Platform
Senior Software Engineer on Observe by Snowflake’s Data Management team, owning the APIs, schemas, and abstractions for scalable tables, views, and materialized views across streaming telemetry. Requires 5+ years of experience with databases, SQL, streaming or data pipelines, API design, and production distributed systems.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Own the data modeling product surface, including APIs, schemas, and abstractions for creating tables, views, and materialized views.
- Design coherent abstractions for streaming materialized views, reference tables, and log-derived metrics.
- Define freshness and staleness semantics and controls balancing query latency with compute cost.
- Design APIs with versioning, backward compatibility, polymorphic data models, and clean system contracts.
- Shape the execution engine based on product-surface requirements.
- Support both opinionated defaults for SREs and advanced pipelines with custom joins, windowing, and time-based aggregations.
- Set architectural direction, write production code, and mentor engineers.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience.
- Deep expertise in databases, SQL, stream processing, or data pipeline systems.
- Knowledge of data processing or streaming internals, including late-arriving data, backfills, schema-change reprocessing, and event-time versus processing-time semantics.
- Experience designing and shipping APIs with strong database schema design, versioning, and developer ergonomics.
- Systems-oriented approach to interfaces, contracts, and long-term evolution.
- Strong user empathy and product intuition for how customers define and query data.
- Proficiency in Go or another systems programming language.
- Ability to write production-grade distributed-systems code.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience building customer-facing data modeling or pipeline-authoring products.
- Production experience with watermarks, windowing, ordering, delivery guarantees, and late-arriving data.
- Experience designing or extending query languages, schema DSLs, or transformation DAG semantics.
- Experience building internal data platforms that turn raw event streams into curated, queryable tables.
- Familiarity with Apache Iceberg, open table formats, or data lakehouse architectures.
Compensation and Benefits
- The posting provides an ATS salary range of $200,000–$287,500.
- U.S. salary and benefits information is available on the Snowflake Careers Site.
