Lead Engineer - Embedded Hardware, Power & Safety

Leads end-to-end electrical architecture for heavy-duty autonomous robots, including high-power systems, embedded hardware, safety circuits, compliance, and manufacturing. Requires a master’s degree and 8+ years of experience in embedded hardware, power electronics, and high-voltage systems.

About the job

Responsibilities

System Architecture & Strategy

  • Define the global electrical and power topology for heavy-duty autonomous robots, balancing high-power demands with noise requirements for compute and perception sensors.
  • Architect custom Battery Management Systems (BMS), high-power inverters, and fast-charging systems for rugged construction environments.

Advanced Hardware Design & HIL Strategy

  • Lead schematic design and review for custom PCBs using Altium Designer or Eagle.
  • Focus on high-current routing, thermal management, and EMI/EMC mitigation.
  • Define the global Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing strategy and simulation environments for functional safety and system reliability validation.
  • Design complex, high-reliability wire harness architectures.

Hardware-Defined Safety Systems

  • Architect the global hardware-based safety loop, integrating over-current faults, thermal limiters, hardware watchdogs, distributed compute, and motor-drive signals into a centralized, fail-safe E-stop circuit.
  • Ensure the hardware safety topology complies independently of software state with industrial standards including ISO 13849 and IEC 61508.

Compliance and Manufacturing

  • Drive regulatory approval processes including UL, CE, and FCC compliance testing.
  • Manage contract manufacturer relationships.
  • Define end-of-line testing strategies for PCBs and assembled power systems.

Leadership

  • Mentor and lead a team of hardware engineers.
  • Establish guidelines for design reviews, component selection, and testing protocols.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in embedded hardware, power electronics, and high-voltage DC/AC systems.
  • Expert proficiency in PCB design software, preferably Altium Designer.
  • Extensive experience with regulatory approval processes for heavy electronics, including UL, CE, and FCC.
  • Deep knowledge of EMI/EMC mitigation in mixed-signal and high-power boards.
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication buses at the hardware level, including CAN, Ethernet, SPI, and I2C.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience in the electric vehicle, aerospace, or heavy machinery industries.
  • Experience designing systems to functional safety standards.
