Leads US AI regulatory counseling, compliance-program design, regulatory deliverables, and non-contentious engagement with regulators while supporting global frontier-AI compliance. Requires a JD, US bar membership, technology-regulation experience, and preferably 8–12 years of regulatory legal experience.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Lead in-house regulatory counsel work for US AI regulation, including applicability analysis, regulatory readiness, day-to-day advice, and compliance-program design.
  • Own US regulatory compliance deliverables, including safety and transparency frameworks, model documentation, and incident-reporting requirements.
  • Track legislative, regulatory, and standards developments across US federal and state jurisdictions and relevant international regimes; assess impact and design compliance approaches.
  • Advise legal, compliance, safety, security, business, product, and technical teams by translating complex requirements into practical guidance and scalable programs.
  • Support engagement with US AI regulators, enforcement agencies, and standards bodies, including notifications, information requests, reports, and voluntary standards processes.
  • Partner with Policy and Policy Legal on pre-legislative and rulemaking engagement, comment letters, and regulatory submissions.
  • Partner with Litigation and Regulatory Investigations teams on AI-regulation litigation and enforcement matters.
  • Contribute to global frontier AI regulatory work where it intersects with US obligations.

Requirements

  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in at least one US state bar.
  • Hands-on experience advising technology businesses on emerging regulatory regimes, from statutory analysis through documented compliance positions and shipped artifacts.
  • Experience engaging regulators, enforcement agencies, or standards bodies in a non-contentious supervisory capacity.
  • Experience drafting compliance policies, regulatory submissions, or published compliance frameworks.
  • Ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to technical, policy, product, and business audiences.

Nice to have

  • 8–12 years of regulatory legal experience with depth in technology regulation and exposure to AI-specific frameworks.
  • Experience with California SB 53, the Colorado AI Act, the EU AI Act, the GPAI Code of Practice, or comparable regimes.
  • Experience at a frontier AI company, large technology platform, or hyper-scaling technology business.
  • Familiarity with privacy and data protection, consumer protection, product safety, and export controls.
  • Familiarity with model evaluation, capability testing, or AI safety concepts.
  • Combination of private-practice and in-house experience.
  • Ability to develop compliance approaches amid ambiguity and limited precedent.
  • Strong organizational and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Understanding of constructive long-term relationships with regulators and standards bodies.

Compensation

  • Annual salary: $335,000–$385,000 USD.
