Sensing and Perception System Safety Engineer
Develops safety requirements, analyses, and fail-operational architectures for autonomous-vehicle sensing and perception systems. Responsibilities
- Define safety requirements for sensing systems, including cameras, lidar, and radar, and perception subsystems such as sensor fusion and machine-learning models.
- Lead cross-functional technical projects involving Software, Hardware, Operations, Data Science, and Verification and Validation teams.
- Collaborate with perception, hardware, software, firmware, and systems engineering teams to design safety mechanisms using ISO 26262 and SOTIF (ISO 21448) standards.
- Develop safe, fail-operational, and cost-optimized sensing architectures and guide selection of next-generation sensors.
- Analyze field and simulation data to identify root causes, next steps, and assumption validation.
- Use AI and large-language-model tools to accelerate analysis and automate repetitive processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related technical field, such as electrical/electronics engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, robotics, or mechatronics.
- Experience designing or engineering complex or mission-critical systems with substantial fail-operational redundancy, particularly sensing and perception systems.
- 3+ years of hands-on systems, safety, or related engineering experience analyzing safety-critical, high-integrity systems in automotive, ADAS, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or robotics.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with sensing hardware, physical principles, limitations, and tradeoffs in safety-critical and fail-operational systems.
- Experience applying ISO 26262 functional safety and ISO 21448 SOTIF to L2+ ADAS and autonomous vehicles.
- Experience with hazard analysis, functional decomposition, validation, and verification.
- Experience with Python and/or Databricks for data mining, analysis, and visualization.
- Strong analytical skills in performance-metric definition and system-level tradeoff analysis.
- Understanding of modern perception stacks, ML/AI systems and their requirements, and integration challenges.
- Experience with requirements-management tools such as Polarion, DOORS, or Jama.
