Engineering Manager

Responsibilities

• Own delivery for 1–2 engineering teams, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, delivery forecasting, scope management, and accountability for commitments.
• Conduct 1:1s, set performance expectations, write development-focused reviews, and create individualized growth plans for full-time staff.
• Recruit, interview, and hire engineering talent.
• Manage contractor engineering teams and hold them to the same delivery and quality standards as full-time staff.
• Guide architecture and implementation approaches for team systems, identifying technical and cross-team dependencies early.
• Monitor adherence to engineering standards and practices; identify gaps and recommend improvements.
• Partner with Product Management to translate roadmap priorities into shipped work.
• Proactively remove impediments and escalate risks to leadership.
• Promote knowledge sharing and eliminate single points of failure.

Requirements

• Direct experience with 1:1s, performance conversations, and hiring; informal project leadership alone is insufficient.
• Demonstrated ability to lead projects or features from planning through maintenance with measurable outcomes.
• Ability to balance delivery urgency with team sustainability.
• Sufficient technical background to provide informed architectural guidance and complete basic coding and system design interviews.
• Approximately 8+ years of relevant industry experience is typical for this level; demonstrated capability may compensate for a different path.

• Experience with compliance or vetting systems, carrier or vendor risk data, entity resolution, or trust-score platforms.
• Experience with marketplace matching or pricing systems, rules engines, or posting and bidding workflows.
• Freight, logistics, marketplace, or fintech experience.
• Experience with TMS integrations, API and webhook governance, or partner onboarding flows.
• Experience managing contractor or outsourced engineering teams.

Compensation and Benefits

• Washington-based salary range: $192,000.00–$261,000.00, plus target bonus.
