Software Engineering Manager, Network Security

Leads Anthropic’s Network Security Engineering team, setting strategy and managing engineers who build secure-by-default controls across cloud providers and AI data centers. The role requires extensive engineering management experience, hands-on network security expertise, Kubernetes networking knowledge, and a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Own the network security roadmap, threat-modeling the management plane, Kubernetes, and cloud interconnects.
  • Design and implement default-deny ingress and egress, segmentation between research, training, and production, private connectivity, and mTLS/service identity across environments.
  • Ship secure-by-default primitives so new clusters, VPCs, and data center links inherit appropriate security boundaries.
  • Partner with networking, cluster, and data center teams during design to incorporate secure topology, routing, and firewall decisions.
  • Build visibility into traffic and boundary drift, including detection of exfiltration paths and safe automated remediation.
  • Own network security evidence for security goals and compliance, demonstrating that required invariants hold.
  • Hire, grow, and retain senior security software engineers; support career development and establish scalable team practices.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of frontline management experience.
  • Experience managing infrastructure or security engineering teams, including hiring, developing, and managing senior and staff engineers.
  • Experience growing engineers into staff or lead roles and making performance-management decisions when coaching is unsuccessful.
  • Experience maintaining team delivery through reorganizations, charter changes, or leadership turnover.
  • Experience owning a security or infrastructure domain end to end, including multi-year strategy and year-long cross-organizational initiatives.
  • Experience scaling a team and its systems through hypergrowth.
  • Hands-on network security engineering in cloud and/or on-premises environments, including VPC design, interconnects, private service connectivity, cloud firewall policy, egress control, physical segmentation, and out-of-band or management-plane security.
  • Experience with threat modeling and risk assessment for networked systems.
  • Experience securing Kubernetes networking at scale or working in high-assurance environments where controls must be evidenced.
  • Clear and persuasive written and verbal communication.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a relevant field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Built or rebuilt a hiring loop while maintaining hiring standards during rapid headcount growth.
  • Exposure to large-scale distributed training and its networking requirements.
  • Solved end-to-end networking problems with internal users, cloud account teams, and hardware or colocation vendors.
  • Took infrastructure from initial implementation through production maturity and reliability.
  • Familiarity with AI security and safety concepts.
  • Low-ego, empathetic, pragmatic, and steady leadership style.

Compensation and benefits

  • Annual salary: $405,000–$485,000 USD.
  • Hybrid policy: staff are currently expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time; some roles may require more.
  • Visa sponsorship may be available depending on the role and candidate.
