Systems Engineer, R2 Gateway
Build and operate Cloudflare R2’s S3-compatible API gateway, owning request routing, authentication, reliability, performance, and production operations at global scale. The role requires strong systems programming skills and experience with distributed, high-throughput APIs.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and operate the S3-compatible API gateway serving R2 operations, ensuring correctness, low latency, and S3 API compatibility.
- Build and operate production services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes handling high-throughput request traffic with strong availability and durability guarantees.
- Own the request path end to end, including authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, error handling, and interfaces with storage and metadata layers.
- Lead projects from design documentation through implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
- Improve gateway reliability, performance, observability, and operational efficiency.
- Participate in on-call rotations, resolve incidents, and write postmortems.
- Use AI tools extensively for development, debugging, and operations.
- Collaborate with storage infrastructure, metadata, networking, and platform teams on API contracts, capacity planning, and cross-cutting initiatives.
Requirements
- Strong programming skills in Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
- Experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems on the request path with demanding latency and reliability requirements.
- Familiarity with object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge computing, or service-oriented architectures.
- Experience designing and operating high-throughput APIs, including authentication, routing, rate limiting, and backward-compatible API evolution.
- Understanding of monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, and incident response.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfort using AI coding tools in daily development.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with the S3 API.
- Experience with Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, or edge computing platforms.
Compensation and Benefits
- Applicants who reach the offer stage may be asked to attend an in-person interview at a Cloudflare office or hub.
- The position may require authorization to access technology controlled under U.S. export control laws without sponsorship for an export license.
