Senior/Staff Software Engineer, Backend - Web Products

Responsibilities

• Develop deep understanding of the healthcare claims and payments domain.
• Build production-grade backend services using Java, Scala, and/or Rust.
• Set backend development standards, mentor engineers, and raise the team’s programming maturity.
• Represent backend engineering in cross-team planning and cross-functional execution.
• Contribute to complex in-browser applications, ensuring they are extensible, scalable, and secure.
• Balance customer-facing features with technical debt reduction.
• Architect and implement applications that apply machine learning techniques to large volumes of data.
• Design reliable, high-performance systems that operate together effectively.
• Introduce and improve agentic engineering practices and workflows.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, ML/data science, and leadership partners.
• Write technical design documents that translate ambiguous product intent into concrete backend designs.
• Read, understand, and improve complex code while maintaining high quality.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in backend programming; additional full-stack experience is highly desirable.
• Experience designing and shipping customer-facing web application products.
• Meaningful experience with Java or Scala; Rust experience is highly desirable.
• Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems on cloud services at scale.
• Strong systems architecture, design, programming, communication, collaboration, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Product- and user-driven mindset with a focus on outcomes.
• Hands-on experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows in production.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Nice to Have

• Technical leadership in Rust best practices, including idioms, safety, and performance.
