Backend Engineer, Control Plane
Build and operate backend services for Tailscale’s control plane, relay infrastructure, and identity integrations. The role requires distributed-systems and Go experience, SQL knowledge, networking familiarity, and strong independent collaboration skills.

Responsibilities
- Develop the Tailscale product, contributing to open-source client code and backend services.
- Design, build, test, and document core software components.
- Develop features spanning the control plane, relay infrastructure, and identity integrations.
- Own running services by building for observability, participating in incident response, and handling customer support escalations.
- Analyze and improve system efficiency, scalability, and stability.
- Apply a security-first mindset to design and implementation.
- Collaborate with UX/UI designers and product managers on feature development.
Requirements
- Experience with distributed systems.
- Experience with Go.
- Experience with one or more SQL databases.
- Familiarity with networking, including IP addressing and routing.
- Ability to work independently and exchange constructive feedback.
- Flexibility in a dynamic startup environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
