Staff Engineer, Engineering Tooling & Observability
Build internal engineering tooling and observability products that help developers understand, debug, and diagnose complex distributed software systems. The role combines modern C++, Python, APIs, Linux, React, telemetry, and interactive visualization with a strong developer-experience and internal-product mindset.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain engineering tools for understanding and diagnosing complex software systems.
- Aggregate logs, telemetry, events, faults, diagnostics, and system state to support investigation.
- Build C++ and Python applications, libraries, services, and integrations for complex onboard and distributed systems.
- Correlate information across software components, processes, and machines.
- Build React-based interfaces and interactive visualizations for engineering data.
- Design workflows for debugging, fault investigation, system introspection, and engineering analysis.
- Develop APIs and web services for engineering tooling products.
- Improve developer experience by turning engineering friction into practical tooling.
- Collaborate with software, autonomy, systems, and test engineers to identify and solve high-value problems.
- Treat internal tooling as a product and improve usability and effectiveness based on feedback.
- Establish reusable UI components, UX patterns, libraries, and engineering standards.
- Contribute to the architecture and technical direction of engineering tooling.
Requirements
- Strong modern C++ experience, ideally C++17/20 or later.
- Strong Python development experience.
- Experience debugging and reasoning about complex, concurrent, distributed, or component-based systems.
- Experience designing and maintaining production-quality software, libraries, services, APIs, or applications.
- Strong software architecture knowledge and ability to navigate large codebases.
- Experience building tools for software engineers or other technical users.
- Experience with logs, telemetry, metrics, events, traces, faults, or diagnostic data.
- Ability to correlate behavior across multiple software components and data sources.
- Strong Linux development and debugging skills.
- Experience designing APIs, services, and software interfaces.
- Ability to independently identify engineering problems and develop reliable tooling.
- Sound architectural judgment and effective cross-team collaboration.
- Strong practices in testing, code review, maintainability, documentation, and performance.
- Product mindset focused on usability and developer experience.
Nice to Have
- React, TypeScript, and modern web application development.
- Robotics, autonomous systems, embedded systems, or complex physical systems.
- Interactive data visualization for complex engineering data.
- Time-series, event, telemetry, or high-volume engineering data systems.
- Distributed systems and messaging architectures.
- Systems programming, networking, IPC, and communication protocols.
- UI/UX design for technical or engineering applications.
- Desktop engineering applications.
