Staff Software Engineer, Backend

Responsibilities

• Partner with Product Management, Engineering Directors, and Principal Architects to translate strategic objectives into scalable technical roadmaps.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and QA to deliver critical engineering initiatives.
• Lead the design and implementation of features and services within the core Java platform, from conception through deployment.
• Define engineering best practices and contribute to technical designs, proposals, and architectural decisions.
• Mentor Staff and Senior engineers, guide technical design reviews, and raise engineering standards across teams.
• Develop maintainable software with comprehensive test coverage and improve testing and CI/CD strategies.
• Create technical documentation and promote knowledge sharing.
• Use AI coding assistants to accelerate development while maintaining security and code quality standards.
• Identify emerging trends and prototype solutions in device security and AI-native development.

Requirements

• 7+ years of progressive software development experience.
• Experience designing and building scalable, high-performance server-side features using Java and Spring.
• Expertise with high-performance Postgres or MySQL environments, including schema design and query optimization.
• Experience designing, building, and securing RESTful APIs for large-scale systems.
• Knowledge of caching, asynchronous processing, and multithreading.
• Strong understanding of design patterns, scalability patterns, security engineering, and object-oriented principles.
• Experience in agile environments, CI/CD, and automated testing.
• Excellent communication and technical leadership skills.
• Understanding of endpoint security concepts, including TPM, Secure Enclave, MDM protocols, and endpoint detection.
• Conceptual understanding of how iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS security features report state to the cloud.
• Proficiency with AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot.

Nice-to-haves

• Anomaly detection or risk systems experience.
• Cloud security, identity, or authentication experience.
• Familiarity with FIDO, U2F, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OAuth, or federation.
• Cybersecurity principles, secure coding practices, or CISSP/Security+ certification.
• ReactJS experience.
• gRPC API development.
• Microservice architecture.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Compensation and Benefits

• Annual base salary range in Canada: $160,000–$220,000 CAD.
