Software Engineer, Security Rules
Build and operate Rust- and Go-based distributed microservices powering Cloudflare’s application security products. The role requires 3+ years of professional experience, systems-level programming skills, and experience with production-scale systems, databases, and container orchestration.

Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain software systems for Cloudflare’s application security products, including Rate Limiting and Web Application Firewall.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including system design and documentation, coding, automated testing, and production monitoring.
- Collaborate with security, network engineering, SRE, and product management teams to design scalable solutions.
- Review peer work to ensure high-quality, maintainable code.
- Mentor team members and collaborate with support teams.
- Debug complex systems and improve operational health.
- Participate in on-call support outside standard working hours as needed.
Requirements
- 3+ years of relevant professional experience with a technology company.
- Strong programming skills in Rust, Go, C++, or a similar systems-level language.
- Experience building and operating distributed systems.
- Experience monitoring, alerting on, and debugging high-volume production systems.
- Experience with databases, including PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and Memcached.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, empathy, teamwork, ownership, curiosity, and critical thinking.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with modern Unix/Linux development and runtime environments.
- Experience with Prometheus and Grafana.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
Compensation and Benefits
- Portugal-based hires: estimated annual salary of €54,000–€91,000.
