The Staff Machine Learning Scientist identifies and frames product opportunities, researches algorithms, evaluates models, and partners with engineers to ship impactful ML products. Responsibilities
- Play an active role in hiring, mentoring, and career development of other engineers.
- Raise technical standards for performance, reliability, and operational excellence.
- Identify areas where machine learning can create customer value.
- Frame product problems appropriately for machine learning in collaboration with engineering, Product, and Design stakeholders.
- Conduct exploratory data analysis and research to deeply understand problem areas.
- Research and identify appropriate algorithms and tools, balancing pragmatism with innovation.
- Perform offline evaluations to determine whether algorithms will work.
- Work with engineers to bring prototypes into production.
- Plan, measure, and share learnings to inform iteration.
- Partner with the broader team to build excellent machine learning products.
Requirements
- 5–8 years of applied machine learning experience.
- Previous experience in a senior or staff role in data science, software development, or academia.
- Significant demonstrated impact on products or teams.
- Strong programming skills.
- Experience serving as the primary technical leader for a team.
- Strong communication skills within engineering teams and across disciplines.
- Comfort working with ambiguity.
- Advanced education in machine learning or a related field, typically an MSc.
- Scientific thinking skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Track record of shipping machine learning products.
- PhD or experience in a research environment.
- Deep experience in an applicable machine learning area, such as NLP, deep learning, Bayesian methods, reinforcement learning, or clustering.
- Strong statistics or mathematics background.
- Visualization, data, and SQL skills, including Matplotlib.
