Software Engineer

Responsibilities

• Improve the UX of the Retool core editor, including technical challenges like implementing performant drag and drop systems and handling component interactions.
• Expand the types of applications that can be built into different parts of the development process.
• Debug customer problems and build features for them (e.g., Google Sheets integration supporting row additions via cell ranges or lightweight ORM).
• Help assess and recruit future engineers.
• Work on increasing the scalability of Retool’s platform (e.g., frontend application performance, reducing query latencies).
• Own end-to-end projects, talk with customers, engage in technical decision-making, participate in planning.

Requirements

• 3+ years experience in professional software development, ideally in startups.
• Experience owning technically challenging and demanding cross-functional projects.
• Experience across the entire stack, from backend to frontend.
• Experience with cloud based infrastructure like Azure, AWS or GCP.
• Ability to make technical decisions quickly, while looping in key stakeholders.
• A customer-first mindset and an interest in talking with customers.
• Habit of introspection and understanding what’s helped you be successful.

Nice to Haves

• Experience in JavaScript / TypeScript.
• Experience with PostgreSQL.
• Experience in mentoring other team members and working closely with designers.

Compensation

Base pay range: $163,800 – $306,000 per year. Additional compensation in equity. Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
