Sr. Staff Technical Architect, Unified Trading
Architect and own Coinbase’s real-time, cross-asset risk and margin engine for institutional trading. The role requires staff-level backend architecture expertise, low-latency Java and messaging experience, and a background building regulated financial risk systems at scale.

Responsibilities
- Own the architecture of the real-time, cross-asset risk and margin engine, including user and portfolio modeling, multifactor and borrow risk, and cross-portfolio evaluation at scale.
- Design low-latency, high-throughput risk systems while maintaining correctness and performance.
- Drive reliability and performance by owning SLOs, observability, and incident response for risk-critical systems.
- Set technical standards through code, design reviews, and technical-debt reduction.
- Mentor engineers and reduce single-point-of-failure risk.
- Partner with Product, Trading, Financing/Credit Risk, Security, and Compliance to turn technical vision into a roadmap.
Requirements
- Hands-on architecture experience designing, building, deploying, and supporting 24/7 risk systems processing billions of dollars in daily transactions.
- Extensive backend engineering experience and ownership of complex, production-grade distributed systems.
- Experience architecting a cross-asset risk system with user/portfolio modeling and real-time, cross-portfolio evaluation at scale.
- Deep proficiency in low-latency Java and high-throughput messaging such as Aeron or SBE.
- Experience with multifactor and borrow risk, margin, or clearing in regulated or financial environments.
- Experience delivering projects end-to-end, from scoping and architecture through implementation, monitoring, and iteration.
- Experience balancing engineering trade-offs with end-user quality through shipped products.
- Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base salary: $253,895–$298,700 USD, excluding equity and bonus.
- Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
- Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility.
