Staff+ Software Engineer, Auth & Identity
Own and shape highly available authentication, authorization, and identity infrastructure for Anthropic’s products, including agent and enterprise identity capabilities. The role requires 8+ years building backend or platform systems at scale, strong security and reliability practices, and experience with identity protocols or distributed systems.

Responsibilities
- Own critical, high-traffic authentication, authorization, and identity systems end to end, from design through rollout, operations, and iteration.
- Set technical strategy for identity and access across Anthropic products.
- Design credentials for agents and long-running autonomous workloads.
- Route access decisions through unified, low-latency authorization systems with strong security guarantees and multi-region resilience.
- Build identity models for service accounts and agents and link them with authentication systems.
- Design global distribution and multi-region failover for mission-critical services.
- Deepen enterprise integrations, including login policies, recovery methods, allowlisting, and identity-provider integrations.
- Partner with product, security, infrastructure, and consuming product teams.
- Lead migrations in live, high-traffic systems using shadow modes and incremental rollouts.
- Build platform primitives with documentation and self-service adoption in mind.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building and operating backend or platform systems at scale.
- Experience with identity, authentication, authorization, or security-adjacent infrastructure is preferred.
- Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, JWTs, token exchange, workload identity federation, policy engines such as Cedar or OPA, RBAC, or resource-level access control.
- Strong focus on reliability, security, on-call readiness, failure modes, revocation, and availability.
- Experience owning migrations in live, high-traffic systems.
- Product-focused approach to platform engineering.
- Ability to make independent technical decisions and communicate clearly with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Familiarity with AI tools in software development workflows.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with globally distributed databases and multi-region service architecture.
- Experience with Go, Python, Rust, or TypeScript.
- Experience with enterprise identity integrations and major identity providers or cloud IAM systems.
Compensation
- Annual salary: $405,000–$485,000 USD.
- Hybrid policy: staff are expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time.
