Staff Software Engineer, App Runtime
Leads the architecture and evolution of Snowflake’s App Runtime platform, building secure, scalable infrastructure for deploying web applications. The role combines hands-on backend development with technical direction, customer engagement, cross-team influence, and team growth.
About the job
Responsibilities
- Own the roadmap and technical decisions to evolve the public-preview platform into a production-grade one, including horizontal scaling, suspend/resume for cost efficiency, support for stacks beyond Node.js, and stronger access and data-governance controls.
- Author specifications and implement critical code across runtime infrastructure, governance, coding agents, and user interfaces.
- Serve as the primary technical representative for App Runtime internally and externally.
- Partner with customers building Snowflake Apps and convert their needs into roadmap priorities.
- Grow the team by setting a high engineering bar and mentoring future technical leaders.
- Align with adjacent teams including Container Platform, Networking, Cortex AI, Security, and Snowsight on shared goals.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. A master's degree or higher is preferred.
- 10+ years of experience architecting, shipping, and operating high-scale, container-based platforms, including staff-level ownership of technical direction, cross-team delivery, and mentoring.
- Proficiency in Java, Python, TypeScript, or Go, with strong backend expertise and familiarity with modern web stacks such as Node.js.
- Experience working in distributed environments where security, reliability, and performance are critical.
- Exceptional communication skills, including crisp technical writing, constructive debate, and influencing across engineering and product without authority.
Nice to Haves
- Experience leading delivery of 0-to-1 products while balancing feature completeness and time to market.
- Hands-on experience designing and evolving developer-facing SDKs and APIs.
- Experience designing multi-tenant systems, ideally app-hosting platforms or developer tooling, with strong isolation and a security-first posture.
- Accountability for measurable outcomes.
- Holistic software design experience spanning hardware infrastructure through client-side browser performance.
