Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting

Leads workforce accounting across payroll, compensation, equity, benefits, commissions, contingent workers, and expenses while building scalable policies, controls, systems, and automation. The role manages and coaches accountants and requires CPA-level expertise, ASC 718 experience, public or pre-IPO close ownership, and SOX controls knowledge.

Responsibilities

Close ownership

  • Own month-end and quarter-end close for payroll, accrued compensation, bonuses, vacation, severance, retention, benefits, relocation, commissions, contingent workers, and travel and expense.
  • Own stock-based compensation accounting under ASC 718, including expense recognition, cash-settlement matching, equity roll-forwards, and reconciliation to the equity administration platform.
  • Own headcount and compensation reporting, reconciliations, journal entries, variance commentary, audit-ready documentation, and supporting evidence.

Technical accounting and policy

  • Write, maintain, and implement accounting policies and SOPs for payroll accruals, ASC 718, commissions under ASC 340-40, contingent worker classification, and travel and expense.
  • Review technical accounting memos and ensure conclusions are well-supported and consistent with US GAAP.
  • Partner on equity awards, plan changes, and non-routine compensation arrangements, translating accounting guidance into operational procedures.
  • Own workforce-related footnotes and disclosures, including employee benefit plans, stockholders’ equity, and net loss per share.

Controls

  • Design and operate SOX controls across payroll, equity, and travel and expense.
  • Review control evidence and remediate gaps.
  • Establish cut-off and completeness controls for payroll registers, equity administration data, and expense platforms.

Systems and automation

  • Shape ERP integrations with payroll, equity administration, commissions, and travel and expense platforms.
  • Translate accounting requirements into specifications and test criteria, and maintain data integrity after implementation.
  • Automate repetitive, rules-based workflows, including through Claude and other AI tools.
  • Document workflows and controls for knowledge transfer, audit evidence, and scale.

Cross-functional partnership

  • Partner with People Operations, Payroll, Total Rewards, Equity Administration, Sales Compensation, Tax, and Legal.
  • Extend workforce accounting processes to new entities and jurisdictions.
  • Explain complex compensation accounting to non-finance stakeholders.

Team leadership

  • Coach and develop accountants, provide feedback, hire and onboard team members, and establish clear expectations.
  • Balance reviewing team work with hands-on accounting execution.

Requirements

  • Active CPA license or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • Hands-on payroll accounting and stock-based compensation experience under ASC 718, including equity roll-forwards and reconciliation to an equity administration platform.
  • Experience owning accounts through close in a public company or pre-IPO environment, including designing and operating SOX controls.
  • Experience writing and maintaining accounting policies and SOPs.
  • Experience managing or meaningfully coaching accountants.
  • Ability to structure ambiguous problems, reach defensible conclusions, and document them clearly.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with non-accounting partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a relevant field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Progressive accounting experience combining Big Four audit with high-growth or startup experience.
  • Experience with ASC 340-40 commissions accounting, contingent worker accounting, benefits, or relocation programs.
  • Experience with complex equity structures, preferred stock, tender offers, modifications, or international equity plans.
  • Experience preparing or supporting equity, employee benefit plan, and net loss per share disclosures.
  • Experience leading or contributing to ERP, payroll, equity, or travel and expense system implementations or integrations.
  • Experience extending payroll and equity accounting to new entities or countries.
  • Track record of using AI tools to eliminate low-value accounting work.

Compensation and benefits

  • Annual salary: $230,000–$300,000 USD.
  • Hybrid policy: staff are expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time.
