Safety & Security Counsel

Provides first-line legal counsel on AI safety, security, trust and safety policies, investigations, escalations, and incidents. The role requires a JD, U.S. bar membership, high-stakes legal experience, technical fluency, and strong judgment under uncertainty.

Responsibilities

  • Advise Safeguards and trust & safety policy teams on usage policies across harm areas, including CBRNE, cyber, user wellbeing, scaled abuse and influence operations, and distillation.
  • Advise on policy enforcement frameworks, including account actions, appeals, enforcement systems, and thresholds.
  • Counsel on sensitive escalations and strategic responses involving governments, law enforcement, regulators, and the press.
  • Advise on safety and security threat intelligence investigations, bug bounty and red-team programs, and safety and security testing arrangements.
  • Support safeguards, security engineering, machine learning, and data science teams developing tooling and detection mechanisms, including data governance and privacy considerations.
  • Serve as a first-line legal contact for safety and security incidents, providing real-time incident-response guidance and assessing notification and reporting obligations.
  • Build and maintain crisis management playbooks, escalation protocols, and self-serve legal guidance.
  • Monitor AI safety, security, and regulatory developments and translate them into practical guidance.

Requirements

  • JD and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Experience handling fast-moving, high-stakes investigations, regulatory matters, crisis management, or enforcement work.
  • Working knowledge of trust and safety, cybersecurity, privacy, or platform regulation.
  • Technical fluency sufficient to understand system architecture, data flows, and AI model behavior.
  • Strong legal writing and drafting skills.
  • Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder responses to time-sensitive matters and translating legal analysis into actionable guidance.
  • Strong risk assessment and decision-making judgment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Active membership in the California state bar.
  • 4–8+ years of relevant legal experience.
  • In-house product counsel experience at a technology company involving security or trust and safety, or law firm experience advising technology clients on regulatory investigations or enforcement.
  • Experience with content moderation, platform safety, user wellbeing, or crisis management.
  • Experience working with machine learning, safety and security research, infrastructure, or threat intelligence teams.
  • Familiarity with AI systems, machine learning concepts, or novel technology products.
  • Low-ego, hands-on working style and commitment to users affected by AI misuse.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $265,000–$335,000 USD.
  • Hybrid role requiring work from the San Francisco office at least 3 days per week.
  • Visa sponsorship may be available.
