Staff Backend Engineer, CI/CD

Lead the technical direction and evolution of Fetch’s CI/CD platform, improving build, test, deployment, and developer workflows at scale. The role requires 8+ years of software engineering experience, Staff-level cross-team leadership, and strong expertise in DevOps, cloud infrastructure, automation, and software delivery systems.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for CI/CD systems and software delivery infrastructure.
  • Own a multi-quarter CI/CD roadmap aligned with organizational priorities, cost tradeoffs, and engineering strategy.
  • Design, build, and evolve scalable CI pipelines, deployment systems, and developer automation.
  • Improve developer feedback on build failures, test results, quality signals, and deployment health.
  • Identify and eliminate bottlenecks across build, test, merge, deployment, and release workflows.
  • Improve CI performance through caching, parallelization, workload optimization, infrastructure improvements, and strategic test execution.
  • Design quality gates and automated safeguards that preserve reliability while enabling rapid delivery.
  • Build standardized software delivery platform capabilities while maintaining team autonomy.
  • Partner with infrastructure, SRE, security, backend, frontend, and mobile engineering teams.
  • Establish CI/CD observability and metrics, including feedback time, pipeline reliability, infrastructure utilization, and deployment performance.
  • Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions and introduce technologies that materially improve delivery systems.
  • Lead complex cross-team initiatives from problem definition through adoption.
  • Drive adoption through documentation, technical guidance, training, and hands-on collaboration.
  • Mentor senior and staff engineers and establish practices that raise the technical bar.
  • Explore AI and agentic workflows for build, test, review, deployment, and operations.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience with CI/CD, developer infrastructure, platform engineering, DevOps, or related systems.
  • Demonstrated Staff-level technical leadership across multiple engineering teams.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers and establishing effective technical standards and practices.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals across application and infrastructure boundaries.
  • Experience designing and operating modern CI/CD systems at meaningful scale.
  • Strong understanding of build systems, testing infrastructure, deployment strategies, artifact management, and release automation.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automated provisioning.
  • Strong understanding of containers and orchestration technologies.
  • Experience diagnosing performance, scalability, and reliability issues in distributed build or deployment systems.
  • Ability to assess software delivery tradeoffs involving speed, cost, reliability, developer experience, and operational complexity.
  • Ability to write production-quality software and automation.
  • Strong communication and cross-team technical influence without direct authority.
  • High ownership, agency, and comfort navigating ambiguity.
  • Developer-focused mindset and interest in understanding engineering workflows.
