Regional Research Economist, Economic Research
Conducts empirical economic research on AI’s effects across labor markets, productivity, inequality, and industry transformation. The role develops regional measurement methodologies, leads research collaborations, and translates findings into policy and business insights.

Responsibilities
- Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, governments, industry, civil society, and research partners in the region.
- Advance research collaborations addressing country- and region-specific economic impact questions.
- Translate research insights into actionable recommendations for policy discussions.
- Contribute to the development and expansion of the Anthropic Economic Index, including country- and region-specific analysis.
- Design and collaborate on empirical research into AI’s economic effects.
- Develop methodological approaches for studying AI’s impact on labor markets, productivity, task transformation, inequality, displacement, industry disruption and adaptation, GDP, unemployment, and economic trajectories under varying AI-adoption scenarios.
- Work cross-functionally with technical teams to improve measurement infrastructure and data collection.
- Amplify external engagement through research publications, policy briefs, and presentations.
Requirements
- PhD in Economics.
- Strong empirical research record, including novel data sources, economic theory, causal inference, machine learning, or structural estimation.
- Relevant experience and relationships across the region.
- Experience with labor-market analysis, occupational change, task-based technological transformation, large-scale data analysis, econometrics, large language models for social science research, policy-relevant research, experimental and quasi-experimental methods, macroeconomic modeling, time-series forecasting, agent-based modeling, or large-scale simulation.
- Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for large-scale data analysis.
- Experience with novel datasets and measurement systems.
- Ability to learn new technical tools and frameworks.
- Ability to lead complex research projects from conception to publication, communicate technical findings to diverse audiences, and build relationships across academic, policy, and industry communities.
- Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity.
- Comfort working with AI systems and critically assessing their capabilities and limitations.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary: £195,000–£245,000 GBP.
- Hybrid policy: staff are expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time; some roles may require more office time.
- Visa sponsorship may be available.
