Cloudflare's Research Team solves difficult problems in security, privacy, and systems at scale. This involves engineering, data analysis, open source software development, protocol design, implementation of primitives, with lots of measurement alongside.
Successful candidates will be matched to suitable projects in on-going research directions. We are particularly interested in applications in the following areas:
The Internet is evolving in ways that challenge convention, and many existing assumptions no longer hold. Interns and internship projects are designed to help maintain the integrity of the Internet, its systems, and its applications. Some of the fundamental areas we’re investigating focus on include advanced cryptography, hardware isolation, balancing user privacy against notions of identity, network and internetwork observability in a seemingly fragmented world, even applications of formal methods at scale — and this is just a small view into our work! We’re also acutely aware that AI will impact all layers of a globally distributed system and the wider Internet.
Knowledge or experience with at least one of the following:
Conduct machine learning and statistical research to improve unsecured underwriting models, evaluating enhancements through rigorous experimentation and validation. The role requires a graduate degree in a quantitative field, Python modeling experience, and 0–2 years of applied research experience.
Research Engineer Intern on Cloudflare's team solving hard problems in security, privacy, distributed systems, and AI at Internet scale. Requires research track record, systems programming experience, and knowledge in at least one area like networking, ML, or cryptography.
PhD research intern role focused on advancing reinforcement learning, machine learning, and foundation models. Work on large-scale training, optimization, inference, long-context tasks, and improving efficiency, reliability, and robustness for real-world AI deployments.
Postdoctoral Young Investigator role developing open multimodal language models (CellOLMo) that integrate single-cell transcriptomics with biological text and knowledge to study Alzheimer's disease and neurodegeneration. Requires PhD in ML, computational biology or related quantitative field plus hands-on transformer model experience.
