Senior Software Engineer - Metadata

Build and scale backend services for the dbt metadata platform, including discovery, catalog, lineage, and run history. About the role

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement features and performance improvements across Metadata services, including discovery APIs, catalog, lineage, and run history.
  • Develop, maintain, test, and optimize high-quality backend code and reusable components.
  • Write technical designs, seek feedback, and explain design trade-offs.
  • Participate in and review technical designs and pull requests.
  • Improve test coverage with comprehensive unit tests and reduce technical debt through refactoring.
  • Troubleshoot and debug production issues; follow up on incidents with post-mortems and mitigation plans.
  • Break features into tasks, structure project plans, and contribute to sprint and feature planning.
  • Collaborate with product managers, QE, customer support, and engineering peers to deliver scalable, high-quality products.
  • Participate periodically in the on-call rotation and incorporate security considerations into development.
  • Use AI tooling, including IDE assistants, coding agents, and conversational AI, to accelerate development and author or review software-development lifecycle artifacts.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software industry experience solving complex engineering problems.
  • Experience designing and building backend services and reusable components from the ground up.
  • Experience with distributed systems and cloud computing concepts.
  • Ability to write well-structured, performant, and well-tested code.
  • Ability to independently lead feature-level software and design work and explain design trade-offs.
  • Ability to identify design flaws and propose system improvements.
  • Experience with code reviews, technical design, troubleshooting, and testing.
  • Proficiency in a modern backend or systems language such as Python, Java, C++, or C#.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure and with Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Fluent use of AI code assistants, coding agents, and conversational AI for code development and software-development lifecycle artifacts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with continuous integration tooling such as Buildkite.
  • Familiarity with observability tools such as Datadog or Grafana.
  • Experience with ETL, ELT, data processing, or cloud-based data platforms.
  • Experience building or working with metadata, catalog, lineage, or discovery/search systems.
  • Experience with GraphQL APIs and high-throughput, multi-tenant data services.
  • Familiarity with analytics engineering workflows and the dbt ecosystem.

  • Denver pay range: $139,869–$167,849.50 USD.
