Build and lead backend systems connecting DuckDB with cloud execution, focusing on distributed query processing, resource assignment, database performance, and reliability. Responsibilities
- Own major projects in the dual execution stack so DuckDB can process queries seamlessly locally or in the cloud.
- Build cloud platform capabilities that dynamically assign resources across workloads.
- Lead cross-functional work with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams to maintain a coherent end-to-end user experience.
- Advance embedded database performance, distributed execution, and DuckDB internals.
- Develop DuckDB expertise and share it through mentorship and documentation.
- Work with support teams to debug issues, learn from usage patterns, and prioritize improvements.
- Identify architectural challenges and remove bottlenecks proactively.
- Mentor teammates and improve engineering practices.
- Collaborate with DuckDB Labs to align APIs and shape DuckDB's development.
Requirements
- Experience building and shipping complex backend systems.
- Fluency in a backend or systems language such as C++, Rust, or Java; C++ and Rust are especially valued.
- Foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, networking, and low-latency distributed systems.
- Ability to scope and lead projects spanning multiple collaborators and cross-functional dependencies.
- Clear thinking, careful design, and thoughtful technical tradeoffs.
- Ability to mentor peers and contribute to a collaborative, high-agency environment.
- Interest in open-source collaboration and engagement with the DuckDB community.
