Responsibilities

  • Provide independent operational support for the NIH Clinical Center Department of Transfusion Medicine Infectious Diseases Section.
  • Perform specimen accessioning, processing, and moderate- to high-complexity testing.
  • Perform DNA/RNA purification and quantitation and real-time PCR using automated instrumentation, including COBAS systems.
  • Perform automated serology testing for infectious diseases using the Ortho 3600.
  • Organize daily workload according to priorities, rotation schedules, laboratory needs, and patient needs.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including COBAS AmpliPrep/TaqMan, COBAS 6800, Ortho 3600, and microplate washer/readers.
  • Analyze and discuss the interpretation, reliability, and validity of test data.
  • Use laboratory information systems, statistical methods, and computer programs to collect, organize, analyze, and report verified results.
  • Handle and process specimens, perform test analyses, report patient test results, and maintain records.
  • Identify problems affecting test performance or result reporting, resolve problems or notify staff, and document corrective actions.
  • Communicate with medical personnel regarding collection procedures and troubleshoot specimen or documentation issues.
  • Document quality-control activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance; investigate and report discrepancies.
  • Follow established procedures when test systems do not meet acceptable performance levels.
  • Monitor inventory and order reagents and supplies for specialty testing.
  • Maintain laboratory samples, supplies, equipment, and records.
  • Run validations, inspect and clean equipment, and learn new laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety policies, quality-control and quality-assurance procedures, and accrediting and inspection agency requirements.
  • Maintain proficiency-testing records demonstrating that samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology, from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program in laboratory science.
  • Strong experience performing molecular-based testing and serology testing.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least three years of experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory environment.
  • BS MT/CLS certification or equivalent.
