Responsibilities

  • Conduct 3 months of full-time research from the San Francisco office.

  • Collaborate closely with a dedicated 1:1 senior research mentor.
  • Operate with autonomy on research problems without a defined roadmap.
  • Embed fully with the Base Labs team in San Francisco.
  • Contribute to building the research culture from the ground up.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in or recently completed a PhD in ML, AI, statistics, or a closely related field.
  • Publication record or research portfolio demonstrating original, rigorous thinking.
  • Care about the broader impact and purpose of your research.
  • Ability to operate autonomously.
  • Excitement to be based in San Francisco for the full program duration.
  • Interest in building a research culture.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Background as a research engineer with production stack experience.
  • Insights from non-traditional paths (e.g., operators close to real systems).
  • Prior work that may not fit standard credentialist models but shows exceptional quality.

Compensation

  • $15,000 stipend per 3-month period.
