Senior Systems Engineer

Leads systems engineering for autonomous battery-electric rail vehicles, defining architectures and requirements while driving integration, verification, and validation across hardware, firmware, and command-and-control software. Requires a relevant engineering or computer science degree and at least five years working with complex hardware systems.

About the job

Responsibilities

  • Define high-level needs, goals, and objectives based on business and customer requirements.
  • Develop product plans and roadmaps and guide execution.
  • Lead trade studies to determine optimal product implementations.
  • Develop system architectures, concepts of operation, and requirements.
  • Decompose system-level requirements into subsystem requirements across mechanical, electrical, systems, and software engineering disciplines.
  • Manage requirements traceability from system requirements through validation evidence using a structured requirements database.
  • Develop interface control documents (ICDs).
  • Develop compliance matrices, verification and validation plans, integration plans, and design verification test plans and procedures.
  • Lead and perform failure mode and effects analyses (FMEAs).
  • Improve testability, reliability, and system robustness throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Provide technical guidance on engineering best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, controls, aerospace, computer science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience working on complex hardware systems.
  • Direct experience testing electromechanical systems integrating hardware, firmware, and software interfaces.
  • Strong foundation in electromechanical fundamentals and system integration.
  • Experience with acceptance testing, environmental validation, integration testing, and deployment testing.
  • Experience with railroad operations and train control software.
  • Ability to create structured, audit-ready documentation for safety and compliance purposes.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Classical systems engineering practices, including requirements management, functional architecture, and DFMEA.
  • Experience administering requirements databases and maintaining verification traceability.
  • Experience integrating hardware and software systems in regulated or safety-critical environments.
  • Experience implementing process improvements across engineering or manufacturing systems.
  • Python or similar programming languages.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools such as SolidWorks.
