Principal Systems Engineer, DevTools

Responsibilities

• Ship features for AI coding tools.
• Build and improve AI and developer-observability tools.
• Own internal MCP servers, including GitLab, Confluence, Jira, and Backstage integrations.
• Build AI agents.
• Maintain context engineering, including shared configurations, prompt libraries, and agent instructions.
• Integrate AI tooling into CI/CD pipelines.
• Manage security and access controls for AI tools.
• Track organizational adoption and usage.
• Triage and respond to support requests in tool channels.
• Own projects end to end, from roadmap and prioritization through delivery and operations.
• Mentor teammates through code reviews and design feedback.
• Help respond to and prevent incidents affecting tools engineers depend on.

Requirements

• Strong coding ability in TypeScript, Go, Rust, and Bash.
• Excellent debugging skills.
• Source control experience, including branching, merging, and rebasing.
• Experience deploying and operating Kubernetes or a similar platform.
• Ability to break down complex problems, weigh trade-offs, and drive solutions to completion.
• Experience mentoring and raising engineering quality.
• Experience with, or strong interest in, building tools that improve developer experience.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience building production LLM-based tools, including agents, evaluations, and cost or latency tuning.
• Experience with CI/CD systems and build tooling.
• Experience building on Cloudflare’s platform, including Workers and AI Gateway, or eagerness to learn.
• Experience operating Kubernetes on-premises at scale, including SRE, systems design, or architecture.
• Experience building platforms across multiple zones and regions.
• Prior experience on a platform engineering or developer-productivity team.
• Open-source contributions to developer tooling or AI projects.

Compensation and Benefits

• Washington, D.C. hires: estimated annual salary of $230,000–$281,000.
• Colorado hires: estimated annual salary of $200,000–$275,000.
• Compensation may be adjusted depending on work location.
