Manager, Mechanical Engineering
Lead mechanical engineering for complex electromechanical consumer hardware products. Manage a small team of mechanical, soft goods, and prototype engineers while providing hands-on technical leadership from concept through high-volume production.
How You’ll Contribute
This is a player-coach leadership role - you will be the technical anchor for mechanical execution while building and leading a small team.
- Lead all aspects of mechanical engineering execution across the full development cycle, from concept definition and feasibility prototyping through EVT, DVT, PVT, and ramp.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership and direction on cross-functional trade-offs and architectural decisions spanning fields such as thermals, fluids, mechanisms, and sensing.
- Ensure hardware products meet high standards of performance, user experience, and quality.
- Travel to Asia to ensure teams and suppliers are delivering successfully against goals.
- Shape and execute the hardware product roadmap with stakeholders across the company.
- Work with the Chief Product Officer and executive team to shape and execute the hardware product roadmap and features, translating requirements into shippable mechanical architecture, schedules, and build plans.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across electrical engineering, software engineering, sensing and clinical, operations, marketing, and finance to develop and launch products successfully.
Grow and manage a high-performing engineering team
- Manage mechanical, soft goods, and prototype & test engineers, operating as a player-coach who stays close to the technical details.
- Hire and coach talented engineers who can move fast and are committed to our mission.
- Foster a culture of excellence and collaboration.
- Implement systems and processes to ensure the team is operating at peak efficiency, including design reviews, clear ownership, and phase gates.
- Provide feedback, coaching, and performance management to help the team consistently deliver.
What You'll Need to Succeed
- 8+ years of experience developing complex electromechanical systems, ideally high-volume consumer hardware.
- Track record of launching products successfully under aggressive timelines with lean teams, including scaling products to high volume production in Asia (tooling, build management - EVT, DVT, PVT - test tool development, and testing).
- Desire to be technically engaged in the details while managing the team.
- Deep knowledge of injection molding, electronics/sensor integration, and mechanism design.
- Proficiency with thermal engineering, fluid systems, actuators, and soft goods is highly desirable.
- Experience leading early stage product development efforts, including concept definition, feasibility prototyping, and industrial design.
- Demonstrated ability to hire and manage mechanical engineers, with an appetite to build and develop a team over time.
- BSME or equivalent.
- Willingness and ability to travel to China as needed.
- Ability to work from our SF office in alignment with team expectations.
