Staff Software Engineer

Responsibilities

• Lead major initiatives and own a large area of Shepherd's product experience across data collection, automated underwriting, and policy administration verticals.
• Drive technical decisions for your domain while working across the full stack and different disciplines (e.g., underwriting, design, product management).
• Take end-to-end ownership of features and systems from conception through release.
• Contribute to product strategy and architectural decisions.
• Mentor other engineers, help build engineering culture as the company scales, and collaborate closely with PM, CTO, underwriters, and actuaries.
• Ship high-quality product frequently while balancing innovation with pragmatic delivery.
• Communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

• 5+ years of working experience, preferably as a full-stack engineer, with a track record of delivering high-impact products.
• Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript (backend and/or frontend).
• Strong ownership mindset; thrive in ambiguity and enjoy wearing multiple hats (engineer, PM, designer).
• Passion for the built world, construction safety, and productivity.
• Interest in insurance (prior InsurTech or actuarial experience is a plus).
• Strong opinions, weakly held; advocate for ideas but adapt based on better solutions.
• Experience leading or making major contributions to significant projects.
