Software Engineer, Collections Infra

Responsibilities

• Scale the infrastructure behind Notion’s database block, including views, boards, charts, forms, and workflows.
• Improve database load performance, reliability, scalability, and concurrency handling.
• Build backend architecture and platform capabilities for other Notion teams.
• Address challenges involving microservices, high-volume writes from AI agents, and data-layer flexibility.
• Use AI to learn unfamiliar systems, explore debugging paths, generate tests, summarize traces or logs, and evaluate implementation plans.
• Improve database performance and reliability at P95 scale.
• Raise the quality of Collections infrastructure through architecture, observability, documentation, and clearer system boundaries.
• Partner with senior engineers and product-facing teams to evolve Collections as a platform.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering fundamentals.
• Interest in performance, reliability, scalability, and systems operating under real customer load.
• Curiosity about distributed systems, microservices, and data-layer trade-offs.
• Practical comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript, or the ability to ramp up quickly.
• Strong technical problem-solving, iteration, and bottleneck analysis skills.
• Self-guided learning ability and comfort working through ambiguity.

Compensation and Benefits

• Estimated base salary for roles based in San Francisco or New York City: $150,000–$200,000 per year.
