About the role

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test Gusto core products across the Time domain.
  • Mentor engineers while helping solve complex technical problems at large scale.
  • Scale a large Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React application.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to understand customer pain points, develop solutions, prototype, iterate, and launch products.
  • Own features and products across the full lifecycle, from specification and design through launch and long-term iteration.
  • Build frontend code, design and implement reliable backend APIs, and own post-launch outcomes.

Requirements

  • Typically 8+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience building scalable solutions that address customer problems.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver product capabilities.
  • Curiosity about emerging AI frameworks and ability to apply and share safe AI evaluation and scaling practices.
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and deliver measurable customer impact at scale.
  • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance, and reliability challenges.
  • Strong product ownership and ability to mentor engineers.
  • Experience in, or interest in, Ruby on Rails.
  • Appreciation for collaborative, test-driven development.
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code.
  • Effective communication across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Cash compensation targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver and most remote locations.
  • Cash compensation targeted at $197,000–$247,000 in San Francisco and New York.
  • Stock equity is additional.
  • Full-time employees receive benefits and equity (RSUs).
  • Travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required.
  • Employees based in New York City are expected to work from the office approximately 2–3 days per week or more depending on the role.
