Senior Software Engineer, Android

Responsibilities

• Drive the design, development, and field deployment of applications and plugins integrating Ditto’s data synchronization capabilities into situational-awareness tools.
• Architect and develop performant Android applications and services for tactical end-user devices operating in disconnected, intermittent, and low-bandwidth environments.
• Define integration architecture across Ditto’s platform and the broader TAK ecosystem, including data contracts, API boundaries, and synchronization patterns.
• Diagnose and resolve complex application, integration, and data-flow issues on end-user devices in operational environments.
• Build tooling and practices that improve incident response and operational support.
• Mentor engineers, review designs and code, and raise technical standards in Android, ATAK/TAK, and integration architecture.
• Partner with product and engineering leadership to define the edge-integration roadmap.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience building, shipping, and maintaining production applications at scale.
• 4+ years of mobile application development experience.
• Deep familiarity with the Android SDK and Kotlin and/or Java.
• Strong integration-design skills, including API contracts, data-synchronization patterns, and loosely coupled systems.
• Demonstrated technical leadership and experience making architectural decisions and setting technical direction.
• Experience mentoring engineers through code reviews, design guidance, or coaching.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, solve problems quickly, and balance operational fixes with long-term technical quality.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

• CRDTs or local-first architectures.
• Cross-platform mobile development involving iOS, Windows, or Linux.
• ATAK/TAK experience, including ATAK plugins, CoT messaging, TAK Server integration, and plugin architecture.
• Familiarity with constrained, mesh, or MANET tactical networks.
• Embedded databases and offline-first persistence using SQLite, Realm, or similar technologies.
• Tactical edge deployment experience.
• SOCOM, Department of Defense, or federal customer experience.
• Technical lead experience on a small team or complex cross-functional initiative.
• Backend or systems development with Go, Rust, or Python.
