Experimentation Engineer, Robotics

Build and instrument robotic drywall-finishing test rigs, design controlled experiments, and automate robot trials and data collection with ROS 2 and Python. The role requires broad hands-on robotics experience, embedded and electromechanical integration skills, and strong experimental analysis and documentation abilities.

About the job

Responsibilities

Build and maintain experimental setups

  • Design, build, instrument, and maintain test rigs, fixtures, and experimental setups for robotic drywall-finishing trials.
  • Integrate sensors, end-of-arm tooling, actuators, and data-acquisition hardware, including wiring, mounting, calibration, and upkeep.
  • Debug systems across mechanical, electrical, embedded, and software layers, keeping setups repeatable and in a known-good state.
  • Improve setup designs to make experiments faster, cleaner, and easier to reproduce.

Design and run experiments

  • Design and run controlled experiments using hypothesis-driven and design-of-experiments approaches.
  • Identify independent, dependent, controlled, and confounding variables.
  • Maintain repeatability and reproducibility in measurement workflows and distinguish real effects from setup noise.
  • Analyze interactions across robot arms, end effectors, sensors, surface materials, and motion parameters.
  • Document observations in experiment logs, test reports, and result summaries that support engineering decisions.

Automate test protocols

  • Automate test and measurement protocols using ROS 2 and Python.
  • Script robot motion sequences, parameter sweeps, and data capture with minimal manual intervention.
  • Build tooling for automated data collection, logging, and first-pass analysis.
  • Support data collection from end-of-arm systems with advanced sensors, from wiring and drivers through to structured datasets.

Requirements

  • B.E., B.Tech, M.E., or M.Tech in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical/Electronics, Instrumentation, Industrial, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering; candidates from Applied Sciences or Experimental Physics with strong hands-on engineering experience may also be considered.
  • Approximately 2 years of hands-on robotics and automation experience across varied projects.
  • Experimentation experience in a lab, R&D, or test-engineering environment.
  • Working knowledge of ROS 2, including nodes, topics, launch files, and basic packages.
  • Ability to write production-quality-enough Python for automation, data capture, and analysis.
  • Basic embedded-systems knowledge, including microcontrollers, sensor interfacing, UART, I2C, SPI, and CAN.
  • Ability to read datasheets and interface sensors.
  • Hands-on competence with electromechanical assemblies, sensors, instrumentation, wiring, and calibration.
  • Understanding of experimental methods, statistics, design of experiments, control systems, and system design.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis and interpretation of engineering data from physical trials.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Comfort working across disciplines and on unsolved problems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with industrial or collaborative robot arms such as UR, KUKA, ABB, or Fanuc, including motion programming and integration.
  • Imaging-based experimentation, computer vision, machine vision, optical measurement, or laser-based measurement.
  • Designing test setups, instrumentation chains, or validation workflows from scratch.
  • Force/torque sensors, IMUs, depth cameras, encoders, or other advanced sensing integrated into a data pipeline.
  • Data-acquisition systems, real-time logging, or time-synchronized multi-sensor capture.
  • Excel, Google Sheets, NumPy, pandas, matplotlib, or MATLAB for experiment logging, analysis, and plotting.
  • CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Onshape.
  • Git and documentation tools such as Notion, Confluence, Jira, or Google Docs.
  • Simulation environments such as Gazebo or Isaac Sim.
  • Coatings, surface finishing, or abrasives.
